Tom's Story

Why I became an insurance advisor — and why it matters to your family

Why I Do This

Insurance isn’t an investment. It’s a promise.

I spent 30 years as a stockbroker and financial advisor. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when families aren’t prepared — and what a simple, affordable policy can do when they are.

My transition into insurance wasn’t a career move. It was personal. After everything my family went through, I realized the most valuable thing I could do with my experience wasn’t managing portfolios — it was helping people protect the ones they love.

“My brother fought an eight-year battle with Frontal Temporal Dementia. That experience showed me that the right insurance policy can mean the difference between devastation and dignity for a family.”

My Brother’s Battle — and What It Cost Our Family

This isn’t a hypothetical. This is what happened to my family.

My parents visited Arizona years ago and I suggested they look into long-term care coverage. I told them what I tell everyone: “You either die slow or you die fast.” In modern healthcare, it’s often slow — and that’s where long-term care insurance matters. My parents declined. Years later, my brother was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia. His eight-year battle nearly bankrupted our family because there was no insurance. My father later developed dementia too, and my mother couldn’t care for him alone. She wished they’d bought the coverage when I first offered it. These aren’t hypotheticals. This is what happens without planning.

Frontal Temporal Dementia is cruel. It changes a person’s personality, their ability to communicate, their capacity for basic daily tasks — slowly, over years. Watching my brother go through that, and watching my family try to absorb the financial and emotional weight of eight years of care without any safety net, changed me.

When my father was later diagnosed, my mother found herself in the same position — overwhelmed and underprepared. Not because they were irresponsible. Because nobody had helped them understand what they’d face, or how affordable a policy could have been years earlier.

That’s the conversation I now have with every family I meet.

From Wall Street to Your Kitchen Table

Thirty years in finance taught me one thing above all: the difference between people who are protected and people who aren’t isn’t wealth. It’s preparation.

I spent my career helping people grow and protect their money. I worked with families who had very little and families who had a great deal. Across all of them, the ones who slept soundly had one thing in common: a plan for the unexpected.

When I became an independent insurance advisor, I left behind the corporate structure, the quotas, and the pressure to push proprietary products. Today I work independently, which means I’m not tied to any carrier. I shop 13+ top-rated companies to find the coverage that actually fits your situation — not the one that earns me the best commission.
